At the crossroads of Europe, Asia an the Middle East,
Cyprus is situated in the north eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea.
It is the third larges island in the Mediterranean and occupies a total land area of 9,250 sq km.
It is among the warmest islands in the Mediterranean with temperatures in July/August
averaging between 22 & 29 degrees centigrade.
Top temperatures reach above 30 degrees and there are over 300 days of sunshine a year.
The coldest month is January with temperatures between 6 and 13 degrees.
Cyprus offers a mix of exotic landscapes, archaeological sites, sporting and leisure activities.
The scenery ranges from sandy beaches especially around Limassol, Paphos and Cape Greko to
the
mountain forests including the highest point on the island, the Trodos at 1950 meters.
English is widely spoken over the island though locals do appreciate you trying to learn basic
greek
such as Kalimera, the greek for Good Morning.
Driving in Cyprus is on the left hand side, just like the U.K. and traffic jams are almost
non-existent.
The roads are being gradually improved and the new motorway flyover that stretches from
one
side of
Limassol to the other makes visiting villages and other parts of the island
a much more pleasant experience.
Cyprus is renowned for being a safe island with the crime rate being one of the lowest in Europe.
It has been a member of the European Union since
1st May2004 and will join the Euro on 1st January 2008.
